Heute kommt mit Sam Jolly der Frontmann der Eight Legs zu Wort. Diese haben vor Kurzem ihr neues Album “The Electric Kool-Aid Cuckoo Nest” veröffentlicht. Seid mir bitte nicht böse, aber ich habe auch diesen Text nicht übersetzt, da ich ihn nicht verfälschen möchte. Wie immer viel Spaß bei diesem sehr interessanten Einblick!

As we stomp our way into the 21st century, man’s new best friend – the internet – is completely revolutionizing our lifestyle. Since would-be consumers can download music, films and computer programs with the greatest of ease, the people who rely on these commodities must adapt to survive.
With the ongoing lawsuit against the founders of pirate bay, illegal downloads are a particularly popular topic at the moment. Pirate Bay recently boasted a record breaking 22 million users worldwide and, until now, have survived on the loophole that they do not host the files that they make available. Naturally this has made many powerful people within the record and film industry seething mad and their lawyers have finally drawn the blood that they desire from their adversaries. As the legal battle twists and turns towards its conclusion, the Pirate Bay founders could be liable to pay fines of €2.1m and spend 2 years in prison.
With Pirate bay on the ropes, I do not doubt that someone will step in to fill the void. This is an issue that will not simply disappear and amongst those who stand to loose the most are small independent record labels, which increasingly struggle to recoup on their investments as a result of rapidly dropping sales.
Does this mean the death of underground music? No. As it becomes harder to sell music, the commercial emphasis is reduced and artistic values become more important. What’s more, there will be artists and small labels alike who have the foresight to thrive in this new environment. Illegal downloads, for example, can be used to the artists’ advantage as it makes music available to a much broader demographic; those who cannot afford, or do not want to spend money on records.
The challenge therefore is to make money in different ways, the most obvious of which being live music.
As the pressure of file-sharing becomes more and more relevant, we enter an era of evolution. The music industry is changing, but it is not all doom and gloom.

Was soll das hier? Wir sitzen auf der einen Seite. Wir hören Musik umsonst, bei Streaming-Anbietern wie last.fm, Spotify, roccatune. Wir kaufen die ein oder andere Platte oder bezahlen für einen Download. Wir gehen auf Konzerte, kaufen Merchandise-Artikel und bezeichnen uns als Fans. Wir lesen Blogs, wir kennen die Hype Maschine und diverse Onlinemagazine. Und, wenn wir ehrlich sind, dann laden wir auch das eine oder ander Musikstück illegal herunter. Das ist unsere Seite.
Und auf der anderen Seite sitzen die Musiker. Denn die Musikindustrie ist genau genommen nur der Vermittler. Sicherlich ein wichtiger Vermittler, der eine Menge falscher Entscheidungen getroffen hat und trifft, und den man mitunter auch verachten kann. Aber auf der anderen Seite sitzt meines Erachtens der Künstler. Und dessen Meinung zur aktuellen Lage der Industrie geht in meinen Augen sehr oft einfach unter. Dabei wäre es doch gerade interessant zu erfahren, wie Musiker heutzutage leben, womit sie ihr Geld verdienen, wieviel Herzblut mit jedem nicht verkauften Album verloren geht, wie anstrengend das dauernde Touren ist, woher das Durchhaltevermögen kommt, warum man sich das überhaupt antut.
Und aus diesem Grund möchte ich die Musiker fragen. Ich bitte ausgesuchte Künstler, auf meinem Blog ihre Meinung kundzutun. Ihre Meinung zu Fans, zu illegalen Downloads, zu ihrem Arbeitsumfeld, ihrer Lebenssituation, der Musikindustrie, dem Musikerdasein. Dabei sind sie in Form und Inhalt völlig frei. Ob das nun ein kurzes Statement ist oder ein Kurzroman, ich mache keine Vorgaben.
