Carter Tanton – “Fake Pretend” (feat. Marissa Nadler)
I always go with a two-track minimum for artists, allowing my ears hear any act’s ability to twist their sound in different directions. This paid off especially for Carter Tanton, moving from the emotional acoustic pop gem “Murderous Joy” to the psych pop adventure “Fake Pretend”. There is a common denominator throughout, Tanton’s rich vocal abilities that he uses in a chameleon-like fashion, from airy wisps to complex melodies. All-over-the-map is a good thing in Tanton’s case and is something that should make for a solid SXSW showcase. Tanton will be double-gigging throughout his week in Austin – he’s also the guitarist of the buzzy rock band Lower Dens.
